6bProperly installing a new shingle roof is not a particularly complicated process but it does require the use of quality materials, the right tools, and a wealth of knowledge. Most experienced roofers divide the process into several distinct steps when they install a shingle roof. After the old roof is removed, here’s what to expect:

  • Undersheeting & Flashing – Also known as sheeting, the plywood boards that will support the shingles as well as the faschia around the edge of the roof will be carefully inspected and any damaged or rotten sections replaced. In addition, metal strips known as “flashing” will be installed in the transition areas where the shingles meet a wall or another roof. This ensures that the roof will not leak at these junctures.

  • Paper and Shingles – Once the substructure is complete, the entire roof deck will be covered with felt paper to add an additional protective moisture barrier underneath the shingles. The shingles are then installed starting at the roof edge and are then worked up to the roof peak. Additionally, it is important that a double row of shingles be installed at the roof edge to ensure a water proof covering.

  • Vents & Caulking – Most newer roofs will now have a venting system at their peak and other penetrations of the roof for hot water heaters and the plumbing system. The final step in the installation of a shingle roof is ensuring that the transition between these vents and the shingles are properly sealed with caulk so that no water can enter the home.

A Final Note

As you can see, a modern roof is designed to offer protection to the home underneath in several stages. Ignoring one of the installation steps can lead to a destructive leak or a short-lived roof – both expensive propositions. Proper shingle roof installation is a relatively simple, but detailed, process that takes time and experience to do correctly.

Don’t settle for second best when installing a new roof as you will only be wasting your time and money in the long run. For more information on a quality shingle roof installation and other roof issues, please contact us at Perfection Roofing.
