architectural shingle roofing

As a shingle roofing company that has been in business in Tulsa, Oklahoma for over 35 years, we’ve heard many horror stories of roofing jobs gone wrong. Unreliable contractors, lack of insurance coverage, and poor workmanship are just a few issues that can arise when homeowners rush into hiring a company without doing the research. Because your roof is the ultimate protector of your entire space, finding the right company to do the job is critical.

We’ve complied a list of items we feel every owner should know before hiring a roofing company:

Proper Licensing & Insurance

First, verify that the roofer is insured and licensed, as required by the state of Oklahoma.  Ask for proof of these credentials. Without proper insurance, you, as the homeowner, may be liable if a worker is injured when working on your property.

Shingle Roofing Warranties

Roofing companies should provide two separate warranties:

  1. Manufacturers Warranty – This warranty is issued by the manufacturer of your shingles & roofing system.  Various lengths (anywhere from 3 to 50+ years) are available for your protection against manufacturing defects. Ask your roofing contractor to go over what is and is not covered.
  2. Workmanship Warranty – This warranty is often provided by the roofing contractor, who gives a written guarantee of the work done.  Some Manufacturer’s Warranties cover workmanship costs as well.

Ask for Recommendations

Finding a trusted recommendation is important. Since word carries farther when a job is not done well, positive experiences are generally harder find. Ask around your area. If you are in a Tulsa neighborhood, seek referrals from locals, to ensure the company you choose is familiar with the weather as well as city and county ordinances. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau and Trade Associations to ensure the company has a strong rating for their work and complaint resolution.

Ask for Everything in Writing

All official agreements including the estimated length of project, budget, and contractor responsibilities should be given to you in writing. This helps you, as a homeowner, as well as the roofing contractor to know what to expect.
