After a storm has devastated your neighborhood, the last thing you need is your insurance company crawling up your back. The insurance process is not fun for anybody involved, and once you need to contact your insurance company, you usually want it to be over with as soon as possible. But, after a storm there are so many other things running through your mind, how can you speed up the insurance process and get it out of the way?
Don’t Put It Off
Even though dealing with your insurance company is not the most fun thing in the world to do, it has to be done. The longer that you put off calling your agent, the less the cost will be covered, and the longer it will be until your roof repair is finished.
Inspect By Yourself First
After the storm is over, inspect the damage by yourself from the ground. Take a pair of binoculars and inspect the state of your shingles while walking around the edges of your property. Keep an eye out for debris that may be scattered on the ground, and don’t hesitate to bring up anything you see that looks out of place with your contractor. Take pictures of the damage, if it is possible. After your DIY inspection is finished, call in your contractor for a professional inspection.
Your roof repair contractor will give you a list of things that are in need of repair, and you can then pass on this list to your insurance agent stating the cause of the problems being a recent storm. However, make sure you call your contractor as soon as possible. Doing this the first few days after a storm would be most beneficial.
Keep a list and copies of all the pictures of the damage sustained by your roof. Keeping all of the documents for proof of loss and repair costs will be essential later in the process, when trying to prove the validity of your claim. When you have everything organized and completely ready for your insurance agent, the process can be sped up and the storm damage repairs can be covered quickly, getting you immediately back on track.
